Short update this week. I've been doing research for a paper about Scott and Amundsen, who raced to be the first to the South Pole in 1911. Their stories are fascinating, especially in contrast to each other. Scott was a Navy officer and ill-prepared. He died along with his crew on the return from the South Pole. Amundsen was a life-long polar explorer. He made it to the pole quickly and safely returned.
It's easy to rag on Scott and I've been trying to give him some benefit of the doubt, but man, up till the end he and his crew were hauling 30 pounds of unnecessary geological samples when they were literally starving and had frostbitten feet. He makes it hard to keep a detached academic distance about his leadership.
Amundsen's ship was named Fram, which means Forwards in Norwegian.

And quick update on the previous week: I ran 17 miles on Saturday, out of the 18 planned. Only cut short by the snow that was coming down like rain.
Somewhat less than was planned this week. I was so sore after HIIT class (first one after two weeks off) that I didn't run on Wednesday. However I'm starting to feel like I've reached an inflection point, because for the first time I feel like I can imagine running 26.2 miles in one go. Even when I get towards the end of a long run, I can carry on.
